The official currency of the Republic of China is Taiwan Dollar, popularly called TWD. In laymen terms the dollar unit of Taiwan is called “yuan”. It was in 1949 the New Taiwan Dollar was introduced. This new currency was mainly issued to stop hyperinflation that had plagued Taiwan and Mainland China and in the process assisted in reformation of Chinese economy.
With the years passing by Communists Chinese party overcame the government of Republic of China's resistance and formed the government. The New Taiwan Dollar was officially announced as currency of the Republic of China in the year 2000. With this development the Chinese Central Bank began publishing of New Taiwan Dollar banknotes.
Booming economic development during last few decades has been continually resulting in varying currency composition. Since the currency requirement depends on several factors, the Central Bank in China closely follows developments of such demands and proactively plans to cater public requirements.
The exchange rate of Taiwan dollar in relationship to the $ United States dollar (USD) has been varying – in 1960s at over 40 TWD per 1 USD to about 25 TWD per 1 USD in early 90s. At the current exchange rate TWD is close 30 to 1$US.
